Site Assessment Program

Provides on-site sampling and assessment assistance, including the collection of surface soil samples, ground water monitoring well samples, residential well samples, surface water and sediment samples, and ecological assessments.

The Site Investigation Field Unit (SIFU) conducts a variety of environmental site assessments. SIFU has specialized sampling capabilities for collecting ground water, surface water, sediment, soil, leachate, indoor air, sub-slab and soil gas and aquatic biota samples. SIFU’s mobile laboratory provides real time screening data which enables in-field investigative decisions and increases project efficiency. SIFU also can conduct non-intrusive geophysical investigations which are designed to locate anomalous subsurface features prior to beginning intrusive work.


Field Technical Assistance from Ohio EPA

If a local government entity is interested in conducting an environmental assessment at a property, Ohio EPA’s Site Investigation Field Unit (SIFU) may be of assistance. SIFU can provide valuable property assessment to aid in identifying concerns at properties you may be interested in redeveloping.

This work can be conducted at no cost to local governments through a grant received by Ohio EPA from U.S. EPA to conduct targeted brownfield assessments (TBAs) . To apply for grant-subsidized assistance under Ohio EPA’s TBA process, follow the steps below:

  • Contact Dan Tjoelker, Site Assistance & Brownfield Revitalization (SABR) Program, (614) 644-3750 or dan.tjoelker@epa.ohio.gov for detailed information on how SIFU’s services may apply to your project.

  • Complete and submit a Targeted Brownfield Assessment Application Form [DOCX] for consideration in the program.

  • Your request should include a copy of any Phase I Assessment work completed for your property and, if you have developed one, the Phase II sampling plan. Ohio EPA can assist in developing or develop the sampling plan for you, if necessary.

  • If you project is selected, Ohio EPA may request a kick-off meeting with you (along with your environmental consultant or certified professional, if you have contracted with one) to define work expectations, detailed sampling needs and time lines.

Statewide Biological and Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment

Each year Ohio EPA collects data from streams and rivers in five to seven different areas of the state. A total of 400 to 450 sampling sites are examined, and each site is visited more than once.
